Indie has dramatically expanded its horizons in recent years. One of the characteristics that gives indie its wide-ranging appeal is its ability to embrace a variety of sounds, moods, and geographies in ways that few other genres can.

Why 2022 is the best time for indie artists to get into the game

In 2022 I’m hearing Indie music pulling inspiration from electronic, pop, and hip-hop more than ever before with a touch of culture driving from regional sounds worldwide. It’s a nice flavor but sometimes very difficult to catagorize into one basic music catagory.

This cross of so many different genres and cultures has led to music rising from micro-niches that people don’t even realize they favor in their musical tastes. Artists who successfully melt sounds from different genres into something unique can take off with consistent releases that continue to feed that listener. Essentially today artists have the ability to coin their own descriptive styles and create new genres.

Listeners like Gen Z are being pushed forward by a community-driven social mindset that values collaboration and experimentation opening a door to new artists who are just getting started.

Dance music is shifting with elements of past decades mixed with unique cultural blends. Artists this year are also redefining how rock, pop, and electronic intersect to create very interesting new projects with depth and even darker moody themes.

Themes seem to be wrapping around more social conscious topics like gender, sexuality, and Black or cultural life experiences.

Indie Music in 2022 seems to be less about a specific sound or location, and more about a feeling that fans can identify with. Something that steps away from the usual and typical carbon copy paybook from years before into theatrics and fuller projects with a video component and story. The shift is being seen on social alot more through the trends in short form video making the music feel more tangible, memorable and relatable.

According to the Spotify curation team,

“Indie is getting back to its roots and embracing the underground, nonconformist mentality that gave birth to the genre. Instead of big-budget productions, we expect artists to embrace more of the lo-fi, DIY sounds that we’ve heard in eras past.”

2022 is shaping out to be an inspiring year in New Music, I hope you’ll find your thirst for discovery and join me on my journey through the trenches.
