What’s better spotify or radio for indie music promotion
There have been many changes to the music industry yet again this past few years. Apps are starting to move towards making music more accessible to creators, thus allowing indie music to become more visible in the same pool as popular mainstream musicians.
As a musician, you need to know how to stand out in that flow stream that can be cluttered with 80k + tracks launching each day on spotify.
As a Spotify music curator, music journalist and radio show host, I have developed some clear opinions on where indie artists need to be promoting their music.
I think it’s wise to be where people are, and that’s not limited to any one application. I find that people feel better starting where they actually listen to music themselves and expand from there.
There are benefits to all the apps (tiktok, Instagram, facebook, youtube) as well as music streaming services such as Spotify, Podcasts and Terrestrial Radio.
Spotify has changed the way the world consumes music. To understand how they have changed the music streaming landscape, you need to look at their stats.
Spotify has 158 million premium subscribers worldwide (55% of US Spotify users under age of 35) consuming more music with intention than it’s more passive competitor, Radio and podcast together. There are currently 70 million songs on Spotify. Daily Spotify listening times vary from 99 minutes in Europe to 140 minutes in North America.
Keep in mind that a new artist needs help getting their music heard on spotify as 90% of all streams are going to a small group of only 43,000 mainstream artists.
This is why the smarter more savvy artists hire Publicists and focus on building relationships with music curators who have established an audience in their genre.
Spotify Dreams of Artists Making a Living. It Probably Won't Come True
I've been intrigued, impressed, and surprised by Spotify 's earnings results over the years - but never quite so…
The benefit of spotify vs Radio when someone does play your song..
- When you listen to a song on Spotify, you can save the tracks to a playlist.
- Listeners can easily listen to other songs by a particular artist
- New music fans can follow the artists they like on the app.
55% U.S. citizens have listened to a podcast once. That’s a small pool, but some more established podcasts have dedicated listeners paying closer attention than terrestrial radio listeners.
Podcasts give the indie artist the ability to be a bigger fish in a smaller pond.
At A.V.A Live Radio when you hear an artist on the podcast, you can replay the song on Spotify, follow the artist or jump to their Spotify artists profile after hearing the music. Bonus!!
This means that there is a benefit to an indie artist if their music is featured on a show produced in radio-like formats and targets a genre-specific audience.
As listeners hear something they like, they can easily access more from that artist, and all the streams pay out royalties directly from Spotify.
See it for yourself:
Terrestrial RADIO :
According to the latest polls, 272 million people listen to US terrestrial radio but for only 20 min a day on average. Further, people are typically distracted during their listening experience (car rides or work) and only listen to certain popular songs or specific stations as they jump around. This means that less-known songs often get missed or are pushed out of the best listening times due to sponsors’ preferences.
I also find that the average Terrestrial station does not announce the song title and artist name on all shows, so when an indie artist is getting played, no one knows who they are.
One move in the right direction is that Radio is doing more online, and some have Spotify playlists, which help improve visibility. Still, the days of the time invested vs. rewards just aren’t as good as it used to be here.
If you are always only pursuing the goal of Terrestrial radio then you are missing out on reaching target listeners in more active online landscapes.
Now that you understand more about the pros and cons of Spotify vs Radio vs Podcast, here are some resources to help you get ahead of the competition.
