Why You should be watching the Afrobeats music trend in 2023

In 2022 Afrobeats was ranked as one of the most popular music genres on Spotify. The genre itself has been spreading like wildfire for about a decade and has finally started making major waves in the US.

In the US we are seeing the beats infused into DJ mixes and club vibes more than ever before. They’re using it to build hype and get people dancing, but it’s not only for clubs anymore. Afrobeats has become a global phenomenon, transcending the club scene and becoming a huge powerful genre in its own right spawning super stars like Davido and Burna Boy. (see below).

Many famous artists started their careers with an Afrobeat record and continue to use this music style in their tracks today.

“ Nigerian artists who are part of the rising generation of street pop (Asake) will probably lead this pack but you’ll see some other areas of the world getting into this trend as well as other genres sprinkling this into their production.

Street pop leans into traditional elements of Afropop but infuses it with hip-hop attitude, and with a recognizably Nigerian accent.

Some artists who started producing this style in 2018–2020 will of course already have a jump on it and can probably really gain momentum this year perhaps even rising to the top of their niche. It will be interesting to see who rises to the top ranks. “

As one of the most popular music genres on Spotify, the Afrobeats genre is a fusion of jazz, soul and funk with rhythm and blues. It originated in Nigeria in the late 1960s among Nigerian musicians who mixed American soul with traditional Yoruba music. Afrobeat, the popular music genre is expected to be one of the biggest trends in 2023 setting new standards for artists this year.

Afrobeat began as a musical style developed by Fela Kuti in his native Nigeria. The word “afro” refers to African roots and “beat” means it’s a type of music with rhythms from Africa.

The style incorporates elements from highlife, jazz and traditional Yoruba music. Afrobeat songs are usually political and revolutionary messages disguised as fun dance songs that anyone can enjoy listening to at parties or social events like weddings or birthdays (or even funerals). Many people associate this style with musicians like Ginger Baker and Peter Tosh who were influenced by Fela Kuti’s work with his band The Africa 70.

“African artists will only continue to expand beyond their borders and push beyond Afrobeats’ traditional boundaries — incorporating hip-hop, amapiano, R&B, jazz, soul and just about everything else into a melting pot that, for lack of a better overarching term, we’ll still refer to as Afrobeats.”

Davido is the best-selling Nigerian artist of the last decade.
