Musicians Question?

I want to develop a fan base that I can access and see outside of Spotify fans. Where should I focus my Social Marketing efforts? Do I have to make a choice on which platforms to use and use well? Should I, for now, solely focus on Instagram and then see what else to improve afterward?

How to develop a music fan base on social media : the essential music marketing plan that every musician needs to know.

Jacqueline Jax Answer:

It’s good to do what you can handle. That’s the best way to start. Then you can build from there.

Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, and Tiktok platforms are great but require some daily attention aside from planning, content production and posting time.

If you have original music, it’s best since many social pages have a hard time with covers and are blocking much of the audience in some countries.

I would research the demographic first that your music and brand will serve best. Push yourself to get specific. Don’t slide into the habit of saying “My music is for everyone”.

What does your typical listener look like?

-How will your music serve them?

-Where does your listener hang out?

-Are they female vs male

-Age of best listener

-What are they interested in? Meditation? Health & wellness? mental health?

What kind of Activities are they into? Hiking? Walking? Yoga? Running? Dogs? Food & cooking? Dancing? Beach? Travel? Adventure? Extreme sports? Movies or books(romances, action, mystery, thriller)?

By creating an avatar of your ideal listener, you will cast a smaller net that runs deep and will be able to catch more dedicated fans of your music.

When you are more specific, you find fans who are more likely to get on board quickly with a higher level of excitement about finding you.

Content:

Ensure that the destination exceeds the visitor’s expectation once they arrive.

You don’t want to be attracting people to your Instagram page or Facebook page when it’s not able to deliver an experience.

Ensure that your page has plenty of audio that serves that audience and explains how it’s helping them. This way, they can get to know you quickly and decide right then if the account is what they need in their life.

When creating content, think about..

Does the music fit the audience you’re aimed at, and how does it add to their day?

Are you posting music in a way that’s easy to absorb and experience?

Are you starting a conversation with that person on your page to encourage engagement?

Is the flow of content leading them to view more of it?

Does your content look static and repetitious or interesting and fresh?

Does your content include in-the-moment content that’s current to pop culture topics or topics that match your demographic? Does that stimulate debates or conversation? Does it help to deepen your relationships?

Does your page look active?

Are you having conversations with your audience on the posts?

Do people tag others or share on your content?

What else can people do to invest in your music or get deeper into your fan base?

Do you offer a way for fans to participate with you?

-Live streams?

-Touring?

-Merchandise?

-Crowdfunding page that offers more access to you and your catalog in a convenient and valuable way?

Manage your expectations

-Don’t keep looking at empty numbers that aren’t active fans

-Learn to look for small movements forward that give you insights into what you are doing right.

-Learn to be open to adjustments and look for ways to improve.

-Never get anxious and push fans towards anything, don’t go for the direct ask until you know a fan is open to getting involved.

Be patient!!

Things to Remember:

-Everything you do to invest in your music marketing and build your knowledge base is crucial to your future. This includes hiring the right people, getting essential equipment to do the job, learning how to create better content.

-Invest in the right people that can help you do the things you don’t have time to do or can’t do better.

-You are building a business and creating a destination filled with music that serves a specific audience. Don’t expand your net too quickly. Stay focused and consistent.

-Look to build a team you can trust, and that is just as exciting to explore new ways to grow.
